Europe Day 3: Zagreb to Salzburg
Jagged Flat Mountains
My companions in the carriage did find it curious that I was coming all the way from South Africa. Soon after we passed passed this mountain, one of them turned to me and asked “What kind of landscape does Cape Town have? Has it got hills or mountains compared to this?
I paused for a few seconds. My brain thought: “You’re not really asking me that question, are you?” It was also good that I was wearing a mask - I am pretty sure I had the same look on my face as I did in the acting dept days, when students used to tell me they did not know the essay was due that day).
Finally, I replied - “Oh yes, we got something just like this, but the Cape Town version is flat at the top. Like a table. As flat as a table.”
She was also wearing a mask, but I could see her eyes were deeply sceptical.
“What’s it called?” she asked.
A pause.
“Table Mountain,” but I really could have said anything.
There was a slight tilt to the head. I could see I had to provide the reference.
“Oh it really is flat!” she said to her companion while looking at the google image search results for Table Mountain on my phone.
Pretty sure this moment was where I felt the farthest from home.
(The mountains in this clip are part of the Tennengebirge - though to be honest, I did have to google the GPS).
